Brainstorming Baby Names...

Wednesday, January 7, 2009 at 10:29 PM , ,

Tonight, I began scouring the web for baby names. Luckily there are a few great sites, but tons of names to search through.

We believe we've found a name for a girl. Currently, 'Olivia Grace' is the frontrunner. It's not final, although it's currently in the lead.

But 'Ann' is a family name for both me and my wife. Follow me:
  • My wife
  • My mother
  • My mother-in-law
  • My grandmother
  • My wife's grandmother
  • My aunt
  • My aunt's daughter (my cousin)
...all have 'Ann' as a middle name.

We'll probably use a celebrity trend and give her four names, with Olivia Grace being her first name.

At this point, if a little lady were to bless our home, she'd be Olivia Grace Ann Davis.

To say that I haven't questioned whether we could do better would be a lie, but I have a tendency to do that.

For a boy - we have no idea.

I'm digging through old family names like John, William, Thomas, and James, and attempting to come up with a few combinations to get started.

'Derrick' is my middle name, and my father uses his middle name, as well. I'm not opposed to passing that along to my son.

I hope to find a name that's masculine, maybe even a bit powerful. LeBron James named his son 'Bryce Maximus.' Maybe we won't go that far, but you get the idea.

'Thomas Kingston' was an idea I tried recently. 'Thomas' is my father-in-law's name, while 'Kingston' was a name with a little power behind it.

Then what do you call him?

I don't love the name Tom or Thomas, and 'King Davis' seems a bit pretentious. Rebecca wasn't the biggest fan of T.K., so the entire idea is likely out.

Back to the drawing board.

I found a great resource online, specializing in alternate baby names. So far, I've added names I have even the slightest interest in, hoping one sticks.

Here are a few, as long as you understand that I have yet to discuss 90% of them with my wife, and I'm coming up with anything unique, hoping it can be molded or combined with another to complete the name.
  • Halen
  • Bouldin
  • Bevan
  • Jaxson
  • Holston
  • Colton
Looking at my initial list, all the names end with 'n'. For some reason, I seem to be drawn in that direction.

An early favorite for me is Halen, but I can't match it to another name (either as a first, or middle).

Colton, however, is another I seem to focus on.

John Colton Davis?

Michael Colton Davis? Nah - reminds me of Michael Bolton.

It's clear this isn't going to be easy, and we'll use our friends for as much feedback as we can get.

Hopefully they won't lie.
